Marvel’s Voices: Pride #1 will introduce a new trans mutant to the publisher’s universe.
In a press release, Marvel announced that a new mutant named Shela Sexton/Escapade will debut in pride #1 in a story written by Charlie Jane Anders (All the Birds in the Sky), drawn by Ted Brandt (Crowded) and Ro Stein (Crowded) and colored by Tamra Bonvillain (Rat Queens). The press release provided a brief summary of Escapade’s powers, saying she “can instantaneously switch physical locations with another person or trade any specific physical or abstract attribute such as possessions, organizational status, skills, superhuman powers, and even situations!” However, there are limitations to those abilities, as “Escapade is only able to maintain the power for a few hours at a time and must be within 7 feet of her target, and the more complex the switch, the higher the chance of a mishap .”
Marvel’s Voices: Pride #1 will explore Escapade’s life, career and experience as a trans mutant in the Marvel Universe. According to the press release, Getaway will be working with her best friend, the tech-savvy Morgan Red, as a professional thief when she meets Emma Frost and Destiny. This encounter will change her life forever. The press release also hints at a “deadly prophecy” surrounding Escapade.
Speaking about the book and character, Anders, who has won a number of high-profile awards for her science fiction writing, said, “I have loved the Marvel Universe for as long as I can remember, and may or may not sing the Spider -Man cartoon theme in the shower on a regular basis. So I was so thrilled to be able to introduce a brand-new hero to stand alongside all of my favorites. I hope that Escapade and Morgan Red will inspire trans and non-binary people everywhere to believe that they, too, can fight for justice with the power of creativity and chosen family.”

Brandt and Stein previously worked together on Crowded, which was written by Christopher Sebela. The widely-praised series followed Charlie Ellison, who hires a bodyguard named Vita to protect her after she becomes the target of a bounty on a crowdfunding assassination app called Reapr. Crowded was published by Image Comics.
Of Marvel’s Voices: Pride #1, Brandt said, “Now more than ever, we need a hero like Shela Sexton for people to look up to. It was a real honor and a privilege to be a part of her creation process!” Stein then added, “It’s very exciting to be part of bringing a new character into Marvel comics. Working with Charlie Jane’s script was a lot of fun, and I hope people enjoy reading about Escapade as much as we did putting together her first outing on the page.”
Set for release on June 22, Marvel’s Voices:Pride #1 runs 20 pages. Following her appearance in Marvel’s Voices: Pride #1, Getaway will return in an arc of New Mutants written byAnders.
